The Sailing Club owes its existence to efforts of the American Red Cross, Central Florida Chapter, in 1975, to begin sailing instruction in Orlando, Florida.

Judd Wood, then Water Safety Director, and Tom Burgin, Red Cross Volunteer, arranged to add sailing instruction to Water Safety Program of the Health Services Department, Central Florida Chapter, American Red Cross.

Judd is now retired and still lives in Central Florida.  Thanks, Judd, for getting us going!

Ellen Deemy taught the first Basic Sailing class, near the beginning of 1975.  Classes were held at the Naval Training Center's boating recreation center on Lake Baldwin, using Sunfish sailboats owned by the Navy.

Anyone have a photo of Ellen Deemy?

Judd Wood encouraged the creation of a club for these early  Red Cross Volunteer Sailing Instructors.  Judd wanted a club to form so that there would be an officially sanctioned (and insured!) way for the Sailing Instructors to use the boats outside of the Basic Sailing classes as a reward for their volunteer work.  After The Sailing Club formed, its sailing events were considered workshops for the practice of the sailing skills of the Instructors and Instructor Aides.
