Danny Swartzbaugh, above, was  the first Commodore of The Sailing Club.  It was through his involvement with The American Red Cross sailing instruction program and The Sailing Club that Danny came to love the sport of sailing.  He eventually started his own business of selling catamarans, in addition to the electronics distributorship business that he owned.  Sadly, Danny passed away in 1997.  He is survived by his wife Gayle and three children - Penny, Danny and Joshua.

The Sailing Club was organized on February 19th, 1976, as a means to hold events to recognize and reward the volunteer Sailing Instructors and Instructor Aides.

Dues were established at $10.00 a year. The Club's monthly meeting was set as the 4th Monday of each month.  The meeting schedule hasn't changed since, though meeting attendance is traditionally low in a month with FIVE Mondays!!!!

The Initial nine members:

  - Danny Swartzbaugh - Commodore
  - Dick Smith - Secretary
  - Judd Wood
  - Phyllis Walker
  - Betty Rinker
  - Jerry Banton
  - Chris Schutte
  - Roger Gardner
  - Sharon Crouse

There were 32 members by the end of the year.

An Activity Committee was formed in 1976.

The first event was a cookout and sail at Rosemont County Club on Lake Orlando, which had become the site of the water instruction of the Basic Sailing Course.

At first, monthly activities were one open sail at Lake Orlando, one work day, the monthly meeting and one activity away from Lake Orlando.
