The
instructors of the Central Florida Community Sailing
Program are volunteers from The Sailing Club who have undergone
extensive
training and evaluation by American Red Cross Instructor Trainers.
Several of the
current basic sailing instructors contributed
to the development of the Community Sailing Instructor Course outline
and
written exam to teach basic
sailing which have been adopted from the American Red Cross
program. The Red Cross discontinued their sailng program in 2005.
Each
basic sailing instructor is first required to
successfully complete the Instructor Candidate Training
(ICT) course which focuses on instructional and learning techniques and
stresses safety. All courses within the
water safety program exist to teach safety on the water as an inherent
part of
the instruction of a water-based sport.
The goal of the Central Florida Community Sailing Program,
therefore, is
to teach students how to sail a sailboat without injury to anyone in
the boat
or nearby and without damage to the boat or other boats nearby.
Instructors
use structured lesson plans coordinated to “Start Sailing
Right” U.S. Sailing textbook.
